Posts: 11 Oct 4 09 1:17 PM	I got the letter back from DFAS. I want to share it with you. Remmebr I went into the navy in 1988 and out in 1998 got out as an O3. Also, I am out at 90%. Dear Lieutenant Stewart: The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) recently received notification that you are eligible for Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC). However, since our records reflect that you are currently receiving military retired pay for a disability under United States Code Title 10, Chapter 61, legislation requires an offset to the CRSC entitlement. What this means is that the amount of your CRSC entitlement is reduced by the difference between what you are receiving in disability retirement and what you would have been entitled to if you would have retired under years of service. The difference between the two is called your "Method A Offset" and is the amount by which your CRSC entitlement will be reduced by. Your CRSC entitlement can not exceed what you would have been entitled to under years of service retirement. To better assist you with understanding the CRSC payment, below is a step by step formula. 1. If you entered the military on or before September 7, 1980, your active duty base pay from the pay scale at the time of retirement is used to compute military retired pay. If you entered the military after September 7, 1980, the average of your highest 36 months' worth of active duty pay (known s the High 36 or High 3 base amount²³) is used. 2. Your ay is then calculated utilizing two methods, one using you r percentage of disability (Method A) and one using your years of service (Method B). Your final pay is determined based upon the calculation which yields the greater gross pay amount. Method A Calculation a. Multiply your base pay by the disability rating granted by branch of service not to exceed 75 percent. For pay received after September 30, 1983, use only the whole dollar amount. Method B Calculation The Service for Percent is used to calculate Method B. The Service for Percent computation is as follows: Retirement Date - Active Duty Service Date ²³The amounts used to calculate the High-36/High 3 base amount are provided to DFAS by the personnel center of the service branch. Any discrepancies must be resolved by the personnel center. Using only whole months (do not include days), divide the total months by 12. If applicable, round t o two decimal places. The result of your Service for Percent in decimal form. a. Because you are entitled to 2.5 percent of your High 26/High 3 base amount for each creditable year of service, multiply the Service for Percent by .025. Round to the four decimal places. The result is your Percent Multiplier. b. Multiply your base pay by your military disability rating (not to exceed 75 percent), to obtain your initial monthly gross pay amount. For pay received after September 30, 1983, use only whole dollars. If the Method A calculation yields a gross pay amount greater than Method B then there will be a Method A Offset which will be deducted from your CRSC payment for 2009 was calculated. Chapter 61 Retirement Amount $1715.00 Less Years of Service Retirement Amount $1068.00 Method A Offset $647.00 CRSC entitlement at 90% $2350.00 Less Method A Offset $647.00 Adjusted CRSC Entitlement $1703.00 Because $1703.00 exceeds years of service gross pay, your monthly CRSC Entitlement is $1068.00 CRSC is payable the first business day of each month. The amount of CRSC you receive may change based on a changed to your VA disability rating. Additionally, deductions for child support, garnishment or other debts owed to the government may be made. CRSC is not taxable; consequently, no tax withholding is required. Posts: 2976 Nov 6 09 5:39 PM	At 100% CRSC, you should receive your entire earned military retirement tax-free + your 100% VA compensation. I can't help that you live in Texas---you'll just continue to bear that burden.

Posts: 2 Nov 8 09 2:56 PM	Thanks for answer with the CRSC. Now I was just told that I will be consiedered homebound what is that and is there any extra benefits I should get. I have to go for an exam to determine it. But it was suggested by my Doctor. The VARO sent me a letter informing me of this.

Posts: 494 Nov 24 09 10:36 PM	Hey folks, I have about 50% Combat related and another 20% non combat for a total of 70% .... So, if I go CRSC, will I loose $$$ for the CRDP cause they only pay for 50% or more.... confused a bit out here? Does CRSC pay the full VA 70%? dirtbag

Posts: 1 Dec 19 09 10:20 AM	My history is: On June 15 2007 I was placed on the Temporary Disable Retirement List (TDRL) with a disability rating from the army of 30% due to gunshot wounds. I was then paid $1116.00 a month by the army. Then in February of 2008 the VA rated me a with 80% disability. What then happened was all of my army retirement pay was sent to the VA and the VA added $511.00 a month to bring my total to $1627.00. Then in June of 2009 the army had me come in and retest for my injuries. On 22 July 2009 a recommendation from the PEB was to remove me from the TRDL and place me on the PRDL, I was then given retirement orders and the army upgraded my disability rating to 80%. The army then increased my retirement pay to $2233.00 a month. The $1627.00 is being taken out of the $2233.00 then army awarded my and is being sent to the VA and the VA sends me a separate payment of $1627.00. My question is: Should I be getting the CRSC pay, will it be restorative to me back to June 15 2007 or July 22 2009. How much a month with I be getting? Will I receive my full $2233.00 from the army and then a separate check of $1627.00 from the VA?

Posts: 26 Oct 2 10 11:27 PM	sidekick...call into the 800 number and give them the date of your marriage, the place of your marriage, your wifes SSN, tell them you have submitted the form to houston..then will then send a form to Houston and you'll get a quick result, dependency claims are very quick to handle for the people at VA, but not high on the priority list

Posts: 2 Nov 4 10 5:17 PM	One thing not taken into consideration is with dependents or married. I was 40% VA getting 601 a month and 30% CRSC getting 421 a month. Now I'm 50% getting 845 from the VA and it kick over to CRDP (Its an auto). Oh, I'm a retired CWO. I am married with just my wife and I, but it did kick up the VA and CRSC pay and with each dependent it goes higher. I just got my letter today (11/04/2010) with a new CRSC rating of 50%. So now how much of a kick will I get with 50% CRSC? Will it be 845 like my VA/CRDP pay? Open season is next month (Dec) to make the switch. If they are the same or real close I will switch to CRSC because its non-taxable. Where my CRDP is added to my retirement pay and is taxed. Dennis Rick Retired CWO

Along with the medical info, I sent in the dependents form with all kinds of supporting documents including marriage Lic. divorce papers, birth certs. and even copies of the front page of wifes and kids passports, front page of IRS1040 and some other things. When I got my award for IHD in May, They still paid me at the single rate and requested if I have dependents, to send in the pertinate forms! Sent all that stuff again in the second week in May. Still waiting. On CRSC, If all your VA comp is combat related then CRSC will be whatever your Comp. is. It gets tricky if some of your compensation in combat related and some is non-combat related as DAFS will only pay CRSC for that portion that is combat-related. Hope this helps. One more thing, as to the issue of hand printing your forms, all the ones that I've filled out so far has been availiable in PDF on-line and you can fill out the forms on your puter. I have a Brain Injury (TBI) and would appreciate it if someone could please help me and my wife out! We are very lost and would appreciate some help please! Here's my situation: I have already been rated at (90% VA and 100 % UI, (i'm classified at 100 %) I dont know but i'm receiving $2925 a month! After the PEB was done in May 2012, they Medically retired me at 60%! In mid June 2012, I received a letter from DFAS stating I was going to receive $2058 per month starting in July 2012! Two days later, I received a letter from DFAS now stating that my Army retirement was being waived because I am ' recieving 100 % from the VA (again 90% dissability and 100% UI) ! Here is a breadown of my VA rating; -PTSD 70% from 3/8/2006 service connected -Chronic cervical strain /blast injury, service connected,Gulf War Incurred from 4/1/2009 30% -Left rorator cuff tear/blast injury/blast injury service connected 20% from 4/1/2009 -left hip impingment /service connected 10% from 3/8/2006 -Degenerative joint disease, left elbow / service connected 10% from 3/8/2006 -Degenerative joint disease Lumnar Spine service connected , Gulf War incurred/ 10% from 4/1/2009 -Degenerative joint disease, Right Knee/Service connected 10% from 3/6/2006 -Tinnitus / Gilf War Incurred from 1/8/2009 due to Balst Injury, combat, Gulf War 10% -Mild unconplicated Traumatic Brain Injury/ Service connected , Gulf War, Combat Injury from 4/1/2009 10% -Intermetatarsal Nueroma of the right foot /right foot pain/ Service connected, Gulf War, Incurred. 10% -ChondramalaciaPatell, Left Knee,with degenerative Joint Disease, Left Knee pain service connected, gulf War 10% From 1-/12/2010 -Hearing Loss due to Blast Injury/ Combat Incurred, Gulf War, From 3//8/2006 0% I saw a formula of how to do this but we cant figure it out.
