Posts: 1 Jan 14 09 12:03 PM	I was searching through the posts and didn't seem to find anything that specifically answered my question. fist ill introduce myself as I'm new to these forums. I have been a chapter 61 retiree since 1991. I was in for 19 and some change before I was placed on TDRL. I received my 100% rating in late 1993 (70% at time of retirement) for service connected disabilities. After I recieved that letter I fell out the loop so alot of the stuff I have found on these forums is new to me. My question is : If I am already rated at 100% from the va am I already recieving IU? I have never filled out VA form 21-8940. I have read some places that 100% means you are IU but other sources have stated that some individuals with 100% are still working. Wouldnt this mean they were not receiving IU? SFC Atkin

Wouldn't this mean they were not receiving IU?" There two type of 100% 1. 100% Schedule paid at 100% 2. A percent between (60% to 90%) plus IU = 100% One condition rated at a single 60 % One condition rated at 40% and additional SC conditions that will equal at least 70% plus IU will equal 100% paid status "LIFE IS A SERIES OF ENCOUNTERS AND FAREWELLS" evw and through them we grow and become more mature. 80% SC/PT, IU, SSDI, OWCP

Posts: 11847 Jan 14 09 1:07 PM Does not play well With others.	Steven, Welcome to VBN. KP4 is right, since you are already 100%, IU does not come into play for you. In fact you are better off than someone with IU because legally you can earn as much money as you can.

Posts: 1952 Jan 14 09 2:54 PM	steven, First off welcom to VBN, as Brian and KP have stated if you are rated 100% SC , you don't want IU, it comes with no benefits above what you already getting from VA. You might research if you are eligible for Permanent and Total if you are not already. It has some benefits with it. All the luck, "The Cat"

In that, it means the service connection cannot be severed once the rating has been in place for 10 years. There is no benefit to going schedular since you are already collecting at the 100% rate, unless you have another single disability that would be rated at 60%, then being 100% schedular you could get one of the SMC's which pays extra.

I've never been a VSO/NSO. I've been on this board for about 4 or so years. I spent the first few years learning from the pro's like Cruiser and other very smart folks while I was working on my IU claim. Most of the things you see here are seen over and over again so you learn them. While I was working on the IU this board was my life and sad to say it still is. I'm very much a recluse due to my bipolar and don't go out more than a couple of times a week. Now my mission in life is to pay it forward by helping other Vets with their claims.

I understand if I get employed, I'll go back to 70% but there must be a way to try and get out of the 100% IU. At least there may be something I can do with my disabilities even though its keping me from my current profession. Also, at 100% IU, is there a maximum amout I can make. My vSO mentioned I might be able to be a door greeter at Walmart, or was he just messing with me? LOL............What are the rules on 100% IU and school, part time work, and internships?

In a word YES. As for the amount you can earn while IU best number to use is $0.00 except interest or investment income. As a person on IU you CANNOT work at ANY job. It does not mean you cannot be trained to do something new and give it a try. Someone may correct me, but I think you get one year to see how things go after you finish VocRehab.

Anyway I met with the formal USAF Med Board at Lackland AFB and their final decision was 60% disability and termament retirement(after 21 years) and the way the explain that to me is that I will be getting 60% of my High 3 base pay for the rest of my life? Is that correct? I also finished my VA physical a while back and got notification that they have completed my case and rted me at 80% service connected, BUT they also rated me as IU, which they said would take my rating to 100% what does that mean? Will I get a retirement check(60% base pay) from the USAF AND a disability check(from the VA-non taxable). I understand that being rated UI means I can't work, but what other benefits comes with being rated UI? I was told that free college for my wife and kids was one of the extra benefits, can you help me out or at least explain everything to me please? Thanks Rodbo

" First let me welcome you to VBN even Dow this is your post num. 15 To your inquiry: Yes you can apply for school and yes if you qualify you can used your GI Bill to go to school. However you must be aware of few points. The first one, who depends on you, Do you have a wife and kids that you want them to pursue a program or a degree later in life or not. Second, as a 100% IU, your dependents qualify for ChamVA program, and Military ID. If you loose you status they loose there benefits. About school, you can use your GI Bill, but you are 60% awaiting maybe 70 or 100% IU if ever happen. Hope dose. Know with 60% disability you qualify for Vocational Rehabilitation Program, you only need to do is to apply for the program go through the process and BAN you are in school at not charge to you. I do not now your age but if you are young and strong you may be able to acquired a full Bachelor degree via Voc. Rehab and then you can use your GI Bill to increase your education with a Master degree. Be a greeter at Wal-Mart today as the way economy is moving I belief you are dreaming, they are letting go old employee, I do not think will hire any one else, don't even K-mart, or any one else. You need to sit down and come in peace with your self and think what really will benefit you at this time and period. Go back and see if this is what you want or not. Good Luck. Thanks for the welcome CC, This site is great! I'm 38, wife and two children, and I just finished my B.S. with VOC Rehab. I understand there are many good benefits from being 100%IU but since I had a great 100K plus carrier prior to entering the military, I always feel I can do more but I would like to prepare myself for a different career through education (Masters). I also have found it's not that easy to get employment after being medically discharged. Therefore I was contemplating getting an intern job (Non Paying) which the GI bill will support as long as it doesn't interfere with the IU (If I get it). I was surprised that you stated I could get Champ VA with 100% IU. I was told before you needed to be 100% P&T. I was manly just joking about the door greater thing. But I know some people that take small jobs like that just to get store discounts. Thanks again!

Your are correct, but you have to wait for the final outcome of you IU claim to see what VA give you. They may decide that your present conditions are P&T and then give IU with chapter 35, or no future exam, or chamva benefit you never now unless you get the final decision. If so you dependent will qualify for ChamVA. About your Master degree, you already took advantage of the Voc. Rehab program, Now check with VA about your GI bill status and apply for a Master in the institution you acquired you BA. About working with a disability do not lose the opportunity, the federal government offer you at USAjobs.gov, you may be able to apply for a position where you disability and your military background may bring to you an advantage ( 10 additional point). Search the site and inform your self. But if you apply for IU mean you can't work. But again if you finish a BS degree Via Voc Rehab, you have to comply with your part of the contract you sign when you start the program. Hope you remember that? You do have a lot of choice to follow, however all will depend on your final goal in life. I went throug VA voc Rehab, graduate and went in to the work force for about 11 years after graduating. After that my SC disability brought me to a full hold today. I try but at the end my conditions won the fight. Due your best and at the end of the road if you can do it anymore, then the other VA services will be there to help you when that time come and if you qualify.
