PTSD Combat Nightmares and Prazosin HCL 1mg caps |
Lead | ||
|
I started using Prazosin a week ago and my nightmares have been reduced by 90%. My VA shrink prescribed it for me. Anybody else tried using this stuff? Its usually used for blood pressure and prostate problems. The VA is currently doing a study on it and seeking combat Vets with PTSD for the study group.

I tried it, didn't do to much for my ptsd or my prostate.
Then some meds work differently on other folks. Whoop |

I have used 1 mg of Prazosin for nightmares since last October. While they have reduced my nightmares considerably, when I do get a nightmare, it is a seriously disturbing one. I just had a nightmare last night that had me waking up and checking my body for bullet wounds.

19DinIL,
I am not saying I dont have nightmares anymore. I used to have 7 hours of them a night. I would be totally exhausted when I came to in the morning. One or two hours of nightmares a night are tolerable. Huey3 |

This stuff works great, I take 15MGS per night. I was in the Prazosin study at the Seattle VA Medical Center last year. Half the group was given the real thing, the other half given a placebo. Everyone in the group was checked and tested for BP, heart rate, and frequency of nightmares once a week. Also checked by the Doc. and blood draw every few weeks. This went on for around 20 weeks. Half way through they "crack the nut" to see which pill you were taking. If you was on the real deal, you would know by the way it effects the number of nightmares. I had the real thing from the start. It has been a big addition to my meds. I can sleep the night away without nightmares.
Prazosin was used for many years as a alpha blocker to slow the heart rate. Someone from the Seattle VA found that it worked for nightmares. Hopefully soon everyone will have a chance to take this great drug. |

I took Prazosin 5mg at night. It helped at first, but after tens months of its use, I became very allergic to Prazosin. Since then I am taking Seroquel. Sleep is better but not great, still to many nightmares.

Abdokes/Prairie dog...............Wow 15mg/5mg! Are you guys able to stay awake during the day? I've been on 3mg in the pm and 3 in the am for about a year. It has cut down considerably on the nightmares and intrusive thoughts but I do have more vivid/strange and memorable dreams which I didn't have before. I also find myself with very little energy and napping during the day, maybe it's that am dose. It definetely has helped the prostate problems.......still very enlarged but no longer have to get up at all at night to go to the bathroom........Pete L.
(Have had 4 prostate biopsies so just enlarged) |

I started off with the 1mg nightly for about one month and then that really didn't help me much so they raised it to 5mg nightly.
Some of the Side Effects that I have had are: Less common pounding heartbeat ; swelling of feet or lower legs (the swelling of my feet has really been tough for me becuase they hurt all day). Drowsiness; headache; lack of energy; Dryness in mouth; Nervousness; Being very tired in the afternons; and weakness in my hands. >>>Once a medicine has been approved for marketing for a certain use, experience may show that it is also useful for other medical problems. Although these uses are not included in product labeling, prazosin is used in certain patients with the following medical conditions: >Congestive heart failure >Ergot alkaloid poisoning >Pheochromocytoma >Raynaud's disease (Funny thing about this, I got Raynaud's from the VA through a medicine condradiction.) >Benign enlargement of the prostate My doctor thinks that if I continue having the nightmares/flashbacks in my sleep that he will encease the dosage. Has anyone else used this med for flashbacks? If so, what type of luck have you had? The SNOB |

The prazosin helped a lot at first. I start off taking 3, 1 mg. tablets a night but eventually dropped down to two a night because of being sluggish the next
day. Helped my nightmares tremendously at first. Before I started on them I couldn't even take a short nap without nightmares, it got so I hated going to
sleep. Then I started on these and it was like a miracle. This sounds odd but it seemed like I might have had the nightmares still but I seemed to forget
them before awaking which was fine with me. However, I've been on it a year and it seems that it is not as effective anymore. Two nights ago I was back
in Viet Nam again. The thing I really find disturbing about these nightmares are that they seem totally real but they are often very bizarre. Nonetheless,
this medication let me sleep without nightmares for the first time in a couple of years!

Arty,
I started using them about a month ago. I am up to 3mg and really cannot tell if they are worth it or not. I still have some of the nightmares however there may be a slight reduction. Now I am sleepy as hell every day and if not required to go anywhere line school, church or an apporintment, I will sleep untill at least noon. Like the sleep but hate the cloudiness associated with the longer sleeping pattern and the daytime hypersomnelence. |

I'm gonna give it another try | #17 | ||
|
I have a new refill and I'm gonna give it another try. I usually wake-up at 2am and can't go back to sleep so I get up... and stay up until I'm
exausted... and go back to bed for a 30 minute nap. Its pathetic and I need something.... but, do not want to get addicted or be changed in some way. Is this
stuff addicting; its not a narcotic is it? And, will I feel +%%$*# the next day, all day ? I don't want to take an upper to stay awake during the day and
a downer to go to sleep at night. HELL !
Hmmmmm ??????? ! |

I have been give 2mg X 3 each night. The nightmares have morphed using old friends and family most of the time. I still get the really &^%&%
up nightmares but not as often. I wake up around 2:30 am, wait until I am tired, then try to go back to sleep. Often I am tired when I wake up and always have a dry mouth. |

Just started 1mg, so I will see - I did experience the side effect of light headedness which resulted in me falling down while using the bathroom... Humbling
but predictable results, oh well I knew better as I was warned about part of that common side effect. As for results, its to soon to be sure of anything
really.
